Except I'm not actually hungry. I just want to sit here and mindlessly shovel chips or crackers into my mouth. Trying really hard to not eat right now.
I'm almost out of my weekly "cheat" points & I need to make it to Thursday! Ugh...

Surgery tomorrow
I'm going to the hospital in the morning to have my gall bladder removed. Besides the C-section I had when my daughter was born 15 years ago, this will be the only surgery I've had. I was awake for the C-section, but I guess I was put under to have my wisdom teeth yanked. It doesn't seem the same.
The procedure is laparascopic, so I'll go home tomorrow a few hours after the surgery which seems odd to me. There is a 5% chance that once they've started the laparascopic procedure that they'll decide they need to do the old-school "open" style surgery. If that happens, I stay in the hospital for 2 days and will have a 6-week recovery time. This couldn't be happening at a worse time as far as work is concerned, so I'd better not end up with a 6-week recovery time.
I'll have to keep you updated. :)

Maybe it'll feel like spring soon...
1. How did the week go, so far? What success did I experience? What challenges did I endure?
I think it's gone pretty well. The training session that I attended with 2 colleagues went well and I enjoyed getting to know them better. Plus, we've got a good plan for how to use the information back on campus. A challenge has been dealing with higher level administrators that don't understand what we do with students. Another success was going to Avenue Q. What a great production!
2. What did I learn this week? About myself? About others? What do I plan to do - differently or the same - tomorrow?
Mostly, I've learned about StrengthsQuest and how to educate others with it. I've learned about my own strengths. I learned about my colleagues' strengths. I hope to use the information to educate other colleagues about strengths and with my staff I'd like to use the information about them to be a better supervisor.
3. Who did I interact with? Anyone I need to update? Thank? Ask a question? Share feedback?
I've spent a lot of time interacting with the two colleagues that came to the training session. I updated my supervisor today. I also need to update my staff. I need to thank these 2 colleagues for making our time together enjoyable. Right now, I can't think of any questions or feedback that I need to ask or give. Of course, I may be forgetting something. ;)

Wednesday, March 16
1. How did the day go? What success did I experience? What challenges did I endure?
I think today went pretty well. It's pretty quiet at work since it's spring break, but I was able to cross some things off my to-do list, got a short walk in and attended one meeting. My biggest challenge today was keeping myself focused. :) When students aren't around I find myself wanting to continuously check Facebook and Twitter.
2. What did I learn today? About myself? About others? What do I plan to do - differently or the same - tomorrow?
I learned about the rules related to housing selection. My one meeting today was to sit on a committee that heard appeals from students regarding their housing lottery number. That was interesting. Can't believe what some students think are reasons to have their randomly assigned lottery number changed.
I learned that I focus better when I take the time to get out and walk a bit during the day. I also was reminded that I also need some interaction scattered throughout the day in order to have periods of focused energy.
Tomorrow will be different because I won't be going into work. I'm headed to Chicago for a short 2-day symposium on First Year Experience transition programs.
3. Who did I interact with? Anyone I need to update? Thank? Ask a question? Share feedback?
I mostly interacted with the staff in my office - professional and the one student in the office. I do need to send our office manager an email about some equipment that she was asking others about the need to continue to store it. I also need to see if I can think of any additional tasks for the student working in the office for the next two days. I also need to go through a few files I brought home and decide if there are additional items on my to-do lists.

Daily Reflections
So, clearly, I'm not coming here on a regular basis. I was just telling a student the other day that I tend to use this space to vent when I am particularly steamed about something and need to do something to get it off my mind. :) You probably knew that.
I was reading a blog post that I connected to via Twitter. It's titled, "The Best Way to Use the Last Five Minutes of your Day." Here's the link: http://blogs.hbr.org/bregman/2011/01/the-best-way-to-use-the-last-f.html.
I'd like to try to take the time (even if it's only weekly) to reflect on the questions that it lists at the end.
1. How did the day go? What success did I experience? What challenges did I endure?
2. What did I learn today? About myself? About others? What do I plan to do - differently or the same - tomorrow?
3. Who did I interact with? Anyone I need to update? Thank? Ask a question? Share feedback?
I think if I can think about doing this here, it will help me remember what I think about these things. :) Stay tuned...we'll see if I can keep up with this.

Can't wait for these elections to be over
I cannot wait for tomorrow's elections to be over! I'm so tired of the television commercials and all the junk mail the postal carrier delivers everyday.
However, I'm most looking forward to not having to deal with our political student groups planning events. It's not that the groups are doing anything bad or wrong. It's because the higher-level administrators freak out about students showing their opinions and God forbid there might be any media attention!
I just got a phone call at home because a student group had an event and a vice president was all worried because the vp group hadn't approved the event. So, clearly the group was doing something wrong. And, OMG, there was a candidate AND a reporter there.
Seriously, the vp group needs to approve an event with less than 30 students and one candidate?! This feels like they're taking micromanaging to the extreme. Absolutely ridiculous!
It's things like this that make me think I need to find a way to start teaching classes full time. Frustrating!

Stupidest Car Accessory Ever
Just saw a super quick story on the news or, maybe it was a teaser to keep watching after the commercial. Anyway, some car company is experimenting with how you can update Facebook with voice commands in the car. Is this really something that we need? We can't wait to get to our destination to update our Facebook status? Really? What kind of updates will follow?
"Just driving to...HEY ASSHOLE! Get outta my way!"
"Headed out to...hey!" ::brakes screech:: "shit!" ::crashing sound::
I'm a social media geek just as much as anyone else, but I think I can wait & update until I'm out of my car.
